The Sinai: 100 years ago
These photos show the Sinai, 100 years ago. Taken by Eric Matson and the American Colony in Jerusalem, they’re amongst the best early images we have and are always in demand by the local Sheikhs. Obviously, the Sinai has changed today; but not that much. What’s here is still recognisable. Bedouin tents are still made with goat hair; Bedouin cameleers dress differently, but they still enjoy the long stops for tea like their forebears obviously do here; and the mountains are still the mountains; as eternal and unchanging as ever. The photos here are a selection from a bigger CD of Egypt and the Sinai you can buy at Life in the Holy Land.
